Amateur Radio is the best hobby in the world--even better than computers! I have been a licensed radio amateur since 1979, and my callsign is KC8HR. My favorite modes of communication via radio are Morse code, known as CW, and VHF/UHF FM. I belong to the Garden City Amateur Radio Club and the Garden City Repeater Association. The GCRA operates KK8GC/R, our repeater, on 146.860/146.260 MHz. and 224.800/223.200 MHz. If you are a licensed Ham visiting the west side of metropolitan Detroit, be sure to drop by.
As a licensed amateur radio operator, I am responsible for providing emergency and public-service radio communications when necessary. I am a member of the Wayne County Amateur Radio Public Service Corps. This group is under the direction of local, state and federal emergency response authorities. We provide communications for public events, including the annual Detroit Free Press Marathon. We also participate in SKYWARN, a program developed in conjunction with the National Weather Service to assist in spotting tornadoes and other dangerous weather conditions. Follow the links for more information on this rewarding aspect of our hobby.
If you would like to become a licensed Amateur, visit the American Radio Relay League Home Page for the latest licensing information and requirements (news flash: You don't have to learn Morse Code anymore!).
